What are buying intent signals? A practical guide for B2B teams
Buying intent signals are observable clues that a person or company is actively moving toward a purchase. Instead of guessing who might need your product, they let you focus on people already telling the world they have the problem you solve.
The three types of intent data
1. First-party intent — behavior on your own properties: pricing-page visits, docs views, free-trial signups, webinar attendance. Highest accuracy, smallest volume.
2. Third-party intent — data purchased from providers (Bombora, 6sense, G2 Buyer Intent) that track content consumption across publisher networks. Broad coverage, but expensive (typically $15k–$60k+/yr) and aggregated at company level, not person level.
3. Public social intent — what people say in public communities: Reddit threads asking "what do you use for X?", Hacker News comments complaining about a vendor, Bluesky posts describing a pain point. Free to observe, person-level, and time-stamped — but noisy and labor-intensive to monitor manually.
Examples of high-intent public signals
- "Can anyone recommend an alternative to [competitor]?" — active evaluation
- "We're struggling with [problem your product solves]" — problem-aware
- "[Competitor] just raised prices / killed a feature" thread participants — switching risk
- "What's your stack for [job-to-be-done]?" — solution research
- A founder posting a Show HN in your ICP — new-company trigger event
Why public intent matters most for small teams
Third-party intent data assumes you have an SDR team to work company-level signals. If you're a founder or a small B2B team, person-level public signals are more actionable: you can reply to the actual human who asked, in the thread where they asked, quoting their own words. Response rates on this kind of contextual outreach are far higher than cold email because you're answering a question they publicly asked.
How to act on intent signals without being spammy
- Reply where they asked. Answer the question in-thread first; be genuinely useful.
- Quote their words. Reference the specific pain they described, not a generic pitch.
- Disclose your affiliation. "I build X" outperforms astroturfing and keeps you within community rules.
- Move fast. Intent decays in days; a recommendation thread is decided within a week.
- Keep a human in the loop. Auto-posted replies get flagged; drafted-then-edited replies don't.
Monitoring intent signals automatically
Manually watching Reddit, Hacker News, and Bluesky doesn't scale. Keyword-alert tools (F5Bot, Google Alerts) tell you when a word was mentioned, but not whether the mention is a buying signal. LeadSleuth scans Hacker News and Bluesky (Reddit coming soon) for posts matching your ICP, classifies intent (recommendation-seeking, competitor complaint, problem description), and builds a cited dossier per lead with a ready-to-edit reply. Every fact links to its source; nothing is auto-sent.
